The muscular system is an organ system consisting of skeletal , smooth and cardiac muscles. It permits movement of the body, maintains posture and circulates blood throughout the body. The muscular systems in vertebrates are controlled through the nervous system although some muscles such as the cardiac muscle can be completely autonomous. Together with the skeletal system , it forms the musculoskeletal system , which is responsible for movement of the human body. There are three distinct types of muscles: skeletal muscles , cardiac or heart muscles , and smooth non-striated muscles. Muscles provide strength, balance, posture, movement and heat for the body to keep warm.

Striated muscle tissue is a muscle tissue that features repeating functional units called sarcomeres. The presence of sarcomeres manifests as a series of bands visible along the muscle fibers, which is responsible for the striated appearance observed in microscopic images of this tissue. There are two types of striated muscles:. Striated muscle tissue contains T-tubules which enables the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Skeletal muscle includes skeletal muscle fibers, blood vessels, nerve fibers, and connective tissue. Skeletal muscle is wrapped in epimysium , allowing structural integrity of the muscle despite contractions. The perimysium organizes the muscle fibers, which are encased in collagen and endomysium , into fascicles.
The human musculoskeletal system also known as the locomotor system , and previously the activity system  is an organ system that gives humans the ability to move using their muscular and skeletal systems. The musculoskeletal system provides form, support, stability, and movement to the body. It is made up of the bones of the skeleton , muscles , cartilage ,  tendons , ligaments , joints , and other connective tissue that supports and binds tissues and organs together. The musculoskeletal system's primary functions include supporting the body, allowing motion, and protecting vital organs. This system describes how bones are connected to other bones and muscle fibers via connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments.
Organs are groups of tissues with similar functions. Plant and animal life relies on many organs that coexist in organ systems. Organs are composed of main tissue, parenchyma , and sporadic tissues, stroma. The main tissue is unique for the specific organ, such as the myocardium , the main tissue of the heart , while sporadic tissues include the nerves , blood vessels , and connective tissues.
